By the time she was nine years old, her family resided in Louisiana which was where she took home in a regional talent show with the song Patsy Montana's "I Would Like to be A Cowboy's Sweetheart. Decker moved to Georgia around the age of fifteen. She'd started writing songs, and regularly went to Nashville, making the rounds of record companies and music publishers looking for deals. A representative from the label that was independent Big Yellow Dog Records heard her at 17 and started selling her songs to various labels. Decker was 17 when she was able to catch the ear of a representative from Big Yellow Dog Records. They began shopping her songs to labels and artists. Her debut self-titled effort under the moniker Jessie James arrived in August 2009. Jessie James was reasonably successful and featured Wanted the single which climbed into the Top 40 of the singles charts. But while Decker has always believed she was to be a singer from the country, the album was made and promoted with a popular market at heart. Decker fought with the label to gain greater control over her music after two of her singles did not succeed. Her subsequent album, Boys in the Summer was more influenced by country music. Decker had a second album that was titled Sweet American Dreams or Daughter of a Gypsy, but Mercury put it on hold after the first two singles didn't chart. Decker then was let leave her contract.
