Julia Fiona Roberts is the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus, and Walter Grady Roberts. She was born on October 28th, 1967 at Atlanta. Roberts is the fourth Roberts generation to live in Atlanta that began with her farmer great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts. Her father was a young man when he began to take an interest in theater. He acted on at the Emory University campus in 1952 and was also involved in productions outside of Atlanta. While stationed in Biloxi the Mississippi state, he was part of a military unit in the play of Betty Lou Bredemus. In 1955, the couple got married and, in 1956, their child Eric Anthony was born. In 1957, the couple left the military and Walter was enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. In 1960, the couple moved to Decatur Georgia where Walter began working for Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. Walter and Betty Lou started production in 1964 for the children's local Saturday morning show on television called Bum Bum and His Buddies, which they funded themselves. In the following year, they established The Actors and Writers Workshop which was in operation for six years. They also had Lelisa Billingsley (also known as Lisa) as well as Julia (also named Julie) throughout this time.
